RW: Good evening kyle, thanks for taking the time to do a interview. I prob sound a pain in the a**e for asking you to take the time out to do one lol.
KT: Good evening, no problem at all.
RW: Now I understand you do online racing to ?
KT: Yes, currently on UKDirt and on Sim-stox from time to time.
Pics taking by nik eastwood
RW: How long have you been racing online for ?
KT: I think I started out in 2006 season on UKDirt for the first time, on the old Heat platform racing everything to start with, but slowed down after a while to just F1s, F2s and Legends. Now I race rFactor F1 and F2 when I can along with Legends still as they’re great fun.
RW: Have you won any major/big titles racing online ?
KT: I’ve had a few, I was and still am completely terrible at BriSCA Heat but I fluked the Dutch Championship in 2007 from yellow grade, although I think I was the only driver to stay out of the ditch at Sint Maarten. Since then I’ve won the UK Open, the World of Shale and a semi final on Sim-stox in rFactor F1 on Sim-stox and I think my proudest title to date is the British Championship in rFactor F2s on UKDirt. I’ve become quiet fond of the F2 mod recently.
RW: Anyway moving on from online racing - How did you get involved in real life racing and did you always want to race in real life ?
KT: I’ve been going to the short circuit ovals all my life, literally since the moment I was born. I’ve been to every F1 World Final to date and I owe it all to my dad. He is an retired F1 driver Davey Taylor ex-136, having raced from 1970 to 1988 in F1, then V8 hotstox til I was born in 1991 at which point he was forced to retire. Since then we have been going to watch F1 almost every week up and down the country.
RW: Did he have much success in his time as a F1 driver ?
KT: Not really as such, he made red roof once but never won any finals. Plenty of heat races though. He made a World Final once and was given an official finish of 11th, however this was pre-transponder days and it was a messy race, many would argue he was higher than that but that’s another story.
RW: Has any other of your family members ever raced ?
KT: Yes, quiet a lot of them, its very much in the families blood if you like, my Uncle has raced (Colin Taylor ex-135 in F1 for about the same time as my dad sharing a car) another uncle Kevin Spruce ex-81 in hotstox in the late eighties. My mum has also raced in ladies races at Hartlepool, where she got 2nd and at the old Belle Vue where was fenced by Jayne Bean. Aside from that virtually all my family are in touch with stock cars still or at least used to go regularly, and a fair few turned out for the first time in a while to give me support at my Debut at Buxton on the of 9th August.
RW: So what made you want to race in real life and was it always something you wanted to do ?
KT: Ever seen I can remember, and probably since being able to walk and talk I’ve wanted to be out on track doing what I know my dad had done for many years and be amongst the action on track. We could never afford to get to get a ministox despite my pleading so I worked full time between moving from my first college to another one during the summer holidays from May to Christmas meaning I could finally afford a car of my own.
RW: What chassis is your first F2 and can you give a little bit of history/information on it and how you came across it and bought it ?
KT: Well at the time of looking for a car, I had a budget of about 1.5k to spend on a car, not much but I didn’t care, and still don’t as long as I can be out with all the drivers I watched week in week out I’m more than happy with that. So whilst looking out for a car the chassis type etc didn’t matter to me one bit. I looked over a few cars and thought with the money I had the best I could afford would be an old shale car, so Taylormades were looking a likely candidate for my first F2.
I made a regular check of ebay to make sure I wasn’t missing out on any gems, and sure enough I found one. A mid to late 90s HCD with East Lincs engine, and only down the road from me. I arranged to go and see it and instantly knew this was the car for me. The car belonged to white grader Paul Nixon 439, who had to retire due to lack of time to maintain it. We picked it up that weekend. I was absolutely over the moon with it and thank Paul and his family for their friendliness towards me allowing me to get a car far better than I could have ever expected. The car I believe belonged to Robin Little #943 before Paul.
RW: Do your have any aims for this season in F2's and for next season and future and any plans to travel to other tarmac and shale tracks ?
KT: On a very limited budget I am going to concentrate my efforts on local tracks for now such as Buxton, Birmingham, Belle Vue, Coventry with a view to traveling further to Barford, Scunthorpe, Kings Lynn, Skegness and Northampton perhaps next year. No aims for this season, or next year, or the future really I have absolutely no racing experience so I just want to be out on the track enjoying myself but I’m very competitive character, never happy unless I’m winning so a win or two would be nice but they all say that!
RW: Who is your biggest influence on your racing ?
KT: Without a shadow of a doubt my dad is the biggest influence, I’d be nowhere without him, his guidance in how to drive, react in different ways to the car and traffic, the best ways to do this that and the other, its all experience at the end of the day and it helps to have it. On a driving style front, I’m not setting out to copy anybody I’ll adopt my own style and see what I’m comfortable with. I quite like to entertain though!
RW: Is there anybody you would like to thank. Say sponsors, names ?
KT: Yes, many people without whom I’d not have managed to get out on track and I’m so grateful for everybody’s help and support no matter how small but I’ll start with my dad who I definitely wouldn’t have managed to get very far without, Mart Baker, Keith Organ, Paul Nixon, my Uncle Colin, Auntie Joyce, Cousin Matt, Simon Bassett, Malcolm Duckett, my brother and my mum for (just about!) putting up with all the late nights, early mornings and dirty clothes, towels and a truly messy garden. Then there’s many people who I have had advice from including Martin Russel, Dave Williams and Mark Clayton.
Sponsors include:- Think financial limited, Martholme Engineering, Keith Organ, Mart Baker and Simon Bassett. Thanks to all of these guys for their financial help, certainly very appreciated.
I hope I remembered everyone!
RW: Finally thanks kyle for taking the time to do the interview and I wish you the best of luck with your racing this year and for next season. Keep walkerstox pics (Me lol) up to date how you get on .
